What is the Gospel?
The gospel is the good news that God, the sovereign Creator, has acted to save sinners through the life, death, and resurrection of his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. It is not a message about how we can improve our lives, but the news of what Jesus has achieved for us.
1. God’s Holiness & Our Need
God is perfectly holy and just. All human beings are created in His image but are now in a state of rebellion—separated from Him by sin. We are unable to save ourselves, mend our brokenness, or earn God’s favor by our own works.
2. Christ’s Substitution
In love, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to take our place. Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life of obedience and died a substitutionary death on the cross, bearing the penalty and wrath of God on behalf of sinners. On the third day, He rose from the dead, defeating sin and death.
3. Grace Alone through Faith Alone
Salvation is a free gift of God’s grace. We are not saved by our efforts, but by faith alone in Christ alone. Through faith, a person is justified—declared righteous before God because Christ's perfect righteousness is credited to them.
4. Transformation
This good news calls us to repentance—turning away from sin and trusting in Jesus as Savior and Lord. By the power of the Holy Spirit, God transforms our hearts, enabling us to follow Him and desire His glory.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” — Ephesians 2:8-9
